#3: The Cat

"The cat is third, with some of the same qualities but a weaker, punier creature; he neither toils nor spins, he is a parasite on you but he does not love you; he would die, cease to exist, vanish from the earth (in his so-called domestic form) but so far he has not had to."
—William Faulkner, The Reivers

Is a higher number better or worse than a lower number? I don't know the scale :-)from which Faulkner is operating.

I'm proceeding from lowest rank to highest. Faulkner seems to be grading intelligence, first and foremost, so you could call the scale stupidest to smartest.

And the smartest is coming soon!
